Jeju Forum for Peace and Prosperity

The Jeju Forum is a regional multilateral dialogue for promoting peace and prosperity in Asia. The Forum serves as a platform for discussing and sharing future visions on sustainable peace and prosperity in Asia. Hosted by the Government of Jeju Special Self-Governing Province with the full support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Korea, the Forum was launched in 2001 as Jeju Peace Forum. The Forum had been held biennially before 2009 and when it became an annual event in 2011, the Forum was renamed as the Jeju Forum for Peace and Prosperity. Its Secretariat is headquartered in Jeju, South Korea. The Jeju Forum is held in May each year, in Jeju with more than 60 sessions, including plenary sessions and various networking opportunities, thereby providing a great deal of insights to the world.

Reinventing Multilateral Cooperation: Pandemic and Humane Security

Jeju Forum 2020 presents “Reinventing Multilateral Cooperation: Pandemic and Humane Security” as this year’s Main Theme. As the Main Theme suggests, the 15th Jeju Forum will be a much-needed and timely venue for discussions to promote multilateral cooperation in the midst of COVID-19 while seeking new approaches to the concept of security.

The most serious and urgent issue facing humanity today is COVID-19. It has been believed that globalization and multilateral cooperation will bring humanity a bright future of economic prosperity for all. However, a recent surge of unilateralism derails the optimism of globalization based on multilateralism. Unilateralist policies by major powers are gaining force in the process of fighting against pandemic and they are escalating the tensions between the US and China.

Are the days of multilateralism, global solidarity, and cooperation over? If indeed they are, what should humanity resort to for peace and prosperity? This is where the Jeju Forum can play a role. Since its beginning, the Jeju Forum has been upholding the value of multilateral cooperation. With humanity and prosperity in grave danger, our belief that humanity can prosper in peace through cooperation has become stronger than ever and we will share our belief at this year’s Jeju Forum.
